What Is Knee Bursitis?
Knee bursitis refers to a condition when the one or several of the 11 bursae –small fluid-filled sacs that providing cushioning between muscle and tendon – of the knee becomes inflamed and irritated. The bursae most commonly subjected to inflammation are the prepatellar bursa, infrapatellar bursa, pes anserinus bursa and suprapatellar bursa.
Causes of Knee Bursitis
repetitive, minor impact on the area or excessive pressure on the knee e.g. prolonged kneeling
after a sudden, more serious trauma
tendons in ageing patients are less able to tolerate stress being less elastic, and are easier to tear putting stress on the bursa
arthritic joints in the knee can irritate the bursal sacs
sometimes the reason is unknown. It can also be associated with some chronic systemic diseases
Symptoms of Knee Bursitis
pain and tenderness in the knee
warmth or swelling over the affected portion of the knee, most often when pressure is put on it
reduced range of movement, stiffness, due to pain.
increased pain with repetitive movements.
pain even when the knee is at rest.
How is Knee Bursitis Treated?
Traditionally, treatments for knee bursitis consist of temporary pain relief using anti-inflammatory medication, rest, and icing the area. Ice should be avoided as it reduces blood flow to the affected area and negatively impact the delivery of oxygen and nutrients, slowing the tissue healing process. In addition, ice inhibits lymphatic drainage away of toxins and waste products from the area, thereby slowing the healing process. Read more here.
Corticosteroid (cortisone) injections for knee bursitis carry the potential for side effects. They may reduce pain temporarily but do not influence the underlying cause. Side effects include pain, skin discolouration, tendon damage, nerve damage and infection.
AtLaser Pain Therapy, we offer Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) as a direct treatment for knee bursitis. During LLLT, red and near-infrared light is applied to inflamed tissue and injured areas, promoting cellular repair by energising the body’s cells. Treatment with LLLT breaks down inflammation in the bursae and surrounding soft tissue and joints. LLLT stimulates tissue repair treating the underlying cause of pain to effect actual injury resolution.
